52 SONGS / 52 WEEKS

It’s you

It’s You

I started writing this song on Monday of this week. I finished it yesterday and sat down to record it this morning. It has quite literally been a work in progress all week long.

I wrote this song in response to the song I posted last week, which was inspired by my own restless desire for “more” in life. After posting last week’s song, I felt unsettled and wrestled with the question, “So, what is it that I really want more of?” As I began to answer that question, I realized that everything I want more of in life involves my wife. Like everyone else, I’d love to have more money. But it’s not because I want more money; I’d just love to travel more with Betsy. I want more time, generally, in life too. But again, it’s not because I want more time to live; I just want more time with Betsy.

So, wrestling with that question turned into lyrics and those lyrics turned into a love song.

NOTE: If you’ve been around me during a sound-check in the last few months, you’ve likely heard me playing the little two-chord progression that comprises the turn-arounds and verses of this song. I have been stuck on those chords for a while; I just like the sound of them. I especially liked them because I picked up the voicing of each chord while learning Paul McCartney’s “Callico Skies,” a beautiful song he wrote for his wife. It was by no real intention of my own, but I am thrilled that this progression found its way into a song for my wife. (Don’t worry, I’m well aware his song is better!)

Lyrics

Darling, if I had the means
I would build a time machine
Twenty years to live again
Every laugh and every dance

Darling, if I had the means
I would build a time machine

Oh, but I know that with more time
there comes more tears
and more good-byes
No, it’s not time I want more of
my love, it’s you

If I found a pot of gold
I would fly us round the world
Travel to the Isle of Skye
or the gardens of Versailles

If I found that pot of gold
babe, we’d fly around the world

But the magic of each place
is the smile upon your face
No, it’s not miles I want more of
my love, it’s you

Darling, if I had the means
if we won the lottery…
oh, it’s just fun to dream

But it’s not money or more time
not memories, no, all that I
want more of within this life
What I want more of in this life
Oh, all I really want more of
my love … it’s you
